The Goal—God’s Building

Both the resurrection of Christ and our experience of the resurrected Christ have a particular goal: God’s building (John 2:19-22; Ephesians 4:15-16). God’s building is an eternal dwelling place, a building together, in resurrection, of God united with His chosen and redeemed believers for eternity. With both His Old Testament people and His New Testament believers, God has desired a building, a dwelling place (Isaiah 66:1-2; Matthew 16:18; 1 Timothy 3:15). In the Old Testament, God dwelt among the children of Israel first in the tabernacle (Exodus 40:34-38; 2 Samuel 7:5-6) and then in the temple (Psalm 11:4). In the New Testament, God dwelt not only among men but also within man (John 1:1, 14). He first dwelt in the physical body of Jesus (Colossians 2:9). Then through resurrection, His dwelling place was enlarged, becoming the mystical, universal Body of Christ comprising all believers throughout the entire church age (John 2:19-22; Ephesians 1:22-23) (Witness Lee, Church, 79). The Body of Christ, which is the church, is God’s building in spirit (Ephesians 1:22-23; 2:22; 4:12; 16). Thus, in the New Testament God’s building is of life. This life is the resurrection life of Christ which unites and strengthens all His believers to be His unique corporate testimony (John 17:2, 11, 21, 23), the New Jerusalem for eternity (Revelation 21:2-3, 10).
